All About Operating Systems, Part 5: Advantages of Linux®
Today we continue our beginner’s guide to dedicated server operating systems with a basic list of some key reasons why you may want to choose a Linux® OS for your dedicated server.
Safety in Numbers. Linux’s open-source nature is what makes it the most widely used OS kernel. Linux has a huge, worldwide support network that’s very quick to develop any patches necessary to repair problems both real and potential. In fact, the nature of its community essentially means that more people are actively working on solutions and security concerns at any given time than its closed-source competitors, to which developers have much more limited access.
Performance. The Linux kernel is more compact than that of other operating systems — and generally more powerful. It’s also the preferred choice for embedded systems due to its availability and scalability. (Its open-source nature gives developers the freedom to “scale down” the OS as needed as the situation requires.)
Stability and Security. With its roots in UNIX, Linux offers relatively high levels of server stability — which is why it’s often used in industrial applications. And remember, the Linux OS has been around since 1991, and has remained secure through this age of widespread viruses, spyware, and adware.
Cost. Linux’s most obvious advantage is that it is free == as compared to Microsoft products, which require significant fees (that are often recurring). This fee is often necessarily passed on to the consumer via higher hosting prices.
Freedom of Choice. Perhaps best of all (at least from a developer’s perspective), Linux gives you the power of choice. Users have almost complete control over their dedicated hosting operating systems. For those of us who like to get hands-on and take complete control over our OS, Linux is the preferred choice.
Tomorrow, we conclude our six-part operating system overview with a look at some alternatives to the standard OS options.

Quite informative. Thanks for sharing.
