What Small Business Resource Do You Use?

Today we ask our small business customers: What resource do you rely on the most for news and information about small business information, tips and tactics?

Do you visit the New York Times Small Business section? How about smallbusiness.com? Yahoo Small Business? Do you utilize the U.S. Government’s own Small Business Administration website? Which of these sites do you rely on for small business advice, if any? We want to know — tell us your thoughts in the comments section, below.

Understanding and Improving Your Conversion Rates

Among the most important concepts online business owners must understand — and master — is the conversion rate.

What is a conversion rate? When visitors to your site purchase something from you, that means they’ve been “converted” to customers. So, conversion rates are a way to measure how effective your site is at actually making sales.

But it’s a slippery slope: Even successful websites generally have fairly low conversion rates. It’s commonly believed that a mere 15 percent is considered pretty much as high of a conversion rate as it’s possible to get. Most sites fall somewhere around two to five percent.

And many start-ups aren’t even close to one percent.

So — how do you improve your conversion rate? A simple Google search of the term will give you a quick understanding of the most common ways to do so (incidentally, many of these tactics echo the advice we often give our customers in the Aplus.Net monthly newsletter). Some of the more common methods are using web analytics to better measure your web traffic, or making your contact information easy to access or a sales person easy to find.

But perhaps the best way to maximize your conversion rate is to invest in professional website design. Many balk at the costs, feeling that the money saved with a do-it-yourself design is more important than a polished looking website.

However, consider the benefits of professional web design. The better your layout, the easier it is for customers to navigate, and the more likely they’ll be to make a purchase. If it looks like a truly professional site, it’ll also inspire the kind of confidence customers need to be comfortable buying from you.

And regarding the pricing, there’s hope: Those costs are gradually decreasing as technology improves and competitiveness drives down prices.

These, of course, are basic facts about getting a better conversion rate. There’s a lot more to it, and, like many aspects of your business, you’ll find that there’s always more to learn, always better methods to master. Still, learning the ins and outs of these basic concepts will get you on the right path. And remember, you can always rely on Aplus.Net to help get you to the next level.

BNET: “How to Embed YouTube Videos in PowerPoint Presentations”

Today’s post: Quick, simple, yet maybe one of the most valuable pieces of info we’ve come across in a long time.

Many of us have jobs that involve putting together presentations, and of course Microsoft’s PowerPoint platform is by far the most commonly used method of doing just that. So, it makes sense that we’d want to know how to maximize the use of that software. Wouldn’t it be great if you could use YouTube videos in PowerPoint presentations?

Well, thanks to this link from BNET’s Business Hacks tip website, you can. Click here to read the article in its entirety.

Week in Review: Aplus.Net’s WebImage Acquisition Dominates Hosting News

This week, the news of Aplus.Net’s acquisition of the New York-based web design firm WebImage has dominated news in the web hosting industry.

And for good reason — this is big news, not only for Aplus.Net and its hundreds of thousands of customers, but also for the web hosting industry in general. As you may have noticed, acquisitions in this industry are a big deal, because it’s a fairly recent development and because it has significant effects in a marketplace that’s so fragmented that literally thousands of companies are competing for customers. (For more info, check out our article from earlier this month entitled Web Hosting: Is Bigger Better?)

So, today, we offer a rundown of the media outlets that have so far covered this story: Click on the following titles to see coverage in the Kansas City Star; the Kansas City Business Journal; the Milwaukee Business Journal; the Web Host Industry Review; DIRECT Mag; TopHosts; Web Host Directory; HostSearch; Web Hosting Info; and Web Host Magazine. (There are many more industry-specific websites carrying the story; however, the content of these articles is basically the same.)

This is just the beginning. Expect to see more details of this story in the coming weeks. And remember, you’ll read about it first at the Aplus.Net Blog.
